Unit 2:  Age of Exploration

Task 1: Title Page and Checklist (9/4/24)

Draw the title page and tape the check list into the next two blank pages of your social studies notebook. (See my example below).  

Task 2a: Famous Explorers Notes (9/4/24)

Grab a copy of the note packet from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy from the attached file.  Use the Videos linked to the names of each explorer in the slide show to add a fact about each explorer.  The fact should be something that is not already a part of the notes.

Task 2b:  Plotting the routes of the Explorers (9/4/24)

Grab a copy of the map from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy by clicking on the image of my notebook below.  Use the video below to help you draw the routes of voyages of Vasco de Gama, Columbus' first voyage across the Atlantic, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernan Cortes, and Fransisco Pizarro on your map.  

Task 3: The Spice Trade Video Assignment (9/6/24)

Click the link below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom.  Once you open the Google Doc you will use the hyperlinked videos on the page to answer the questions on the Google Doc.  Use complete sentences when necessary.

Task 5: Age of Exploration Study Tools (9/10/24)

Click the link below to access the GimKit assignment about famous explorers and the spice islands.  You need to earn $3,500 to complete the assignment.   

Task 6Sailing Across the Atlantic simulation. (9/1/24 - 9/16/24)

This simulation takes place over three days in class.  It is a group simulation where each group represents a crew sailing across the Atlantic ocean.  The crew will have to make decisions throughout the trip that will determine how successfully they navigate the open seas.  If you are gone during any of the days you can read the scripts linked below to see what happened on any given day.  

Task 7Sailing Across the Atlantic Journal Entry (9/17/24)

Click the link below for your class period in Google Classroom.  You will need to write a minimum of a one page journal entry of the events that your crew went through during the simulation.  Half of your score comes from remembering the events (ex. We towed the boat when the wind stopped) and half the score comes from making the story creative.  (Ex.  We were furious when we were made to tow the boat, but we knew to question the captains orders was madness)

Grab a copy of the note sheet from Mr. Tanner (Or Print your own copy from the link below) and tape it to the next two-page spread of your social studies notebook.  Use the Video link for your class period below to complete the notes.  You will also need to answer the questions that pop up during the video.

Task 10Columbian Exchange Study Materials 

Click the link below to start the GimKit assignment for the Columbian Exchange.  You do not need to write the vocabulary down in your notebook, but you do need to complete the assignment by earning $2,000 by Friday, Sep. 23rd.  Anything that is on the GimKit may appear on the test that we will take Friday as well.  

Task 11Google Classroom Prompt (9/20/23)

For this task, you will need to answer the following question in Google Classroom; Is it okay to celebrate the accomplishments of people in the past who also did bad things?

Task 12Mercantilism and the Triangle Trade (9/20/24)

Grab a copy of the paper below from Mr. Tanner.  Remove the staple and tape both pages of the paper into the next two pages of your Social Studies Notebook.  Once you have taped the pages in, use the slides below to help you fill out all the information you need for your notes.  (Click Here to Print your Own Copy)
