Unit 1: Intro to Social Studies and Mapping
Add Headings and they will appear in your table of contents.
Task 1: Title Page and Task Check List (8/22/23)
On the first page of your Social Studies composition notebook create a header called "Intro to Social Studies and Mapping" You will need to add a colored picture that represents the Unit below the header. You can use my image below as an example but you do not need to copy it exactly.
On the page to the right of the Title Page, you will need to tape in a copy of the checklist for the first unit. This checklist will help keep track of our work and ensure you have completed everything. If you need a copy of the checklist you can click on the picture of the checklist in my notebook to print one.
Task 1a: 5 Themes of Geography Graphic Organizer
Get the 5 themes of Geography Graphic organizer and tape it to the first page of your Social Studies Notebook (See image on the left).
Read the pages below (located on the right) to learn the information you will need to complete the graphic organizer. My advice is to fill out one section of the note catcher at a time. Don't read the entire 6 pages and hope to remember everything.
Task 1b: 5 Themes of Geography Summary Song (8/31/23)
Watch the YouTube video below to see a catchy and memorable summary of the 5 themes of geography. Each theme has a one-sentence summary to help you remember the theme. Make sure you add that summary to your note catcher from task 1.
Task 2: Latitude and Longitude Notes
Grab a copy of the notes packet or print out your own copy by clicking on the image from my notebook below. Tape both pages of the notes separately into your notebook. Watch the video below to completely fill out your notes.
Task 3: Lines of Latitude and Longitude Practice (8/25/23)
Click the link for your class period below to open your assignment in Google Classroom. Open the Google Doc and follow the instructions to answer all of the questions. Turn in the assignment when you have completed it.
Task 4: Plotting Coordinates on a Map (8/28/23)
Grab a copy of the Robinson projection map or print out your own copy from the google classroom assignment. Plot the coordinates from questions in the formative assignment and use a ruler and scale on the map to figure out the real world distances. Watch the video below to help you learn how.
Extra Practice Opportunity: Coordinates Puzzles.
Grab a copy of the coordinate grid from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy by clicking on the image of my notebook to the right. Tape the grid into the next blank page of your notebook. Choose one of the three puzzles on the second page of the document and plot all of the coordinates on the grid. Connect each new coordinate with a line from the previous coordinate. If done correctly you should have drawn a shape with your coordinates.
Extra Practice Opportunity: More practice with scale
Take the Google form linked below to check your understanding of using a scale to find real-world distances on a map. You can use a calculator to help you.
Task 5a: Topographic Maps Notes
Grab the note sheet for topographic maps and tape it into the next blank page of your Social Studies Notebook. If you need your own copy you can click the image of my notebook below to print one out. You will read the information about the 5 themes of geography and use the information to complete the note catcher.
Task 5b: Slope of a Topographic Map (8/29/23)
Click the link below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom. You will need to look at a topographic map and graph the slope of that map as if you were looking from the side. Watch the video linked below for help on how to complete the assignment.
Task 6: Physical Features Vocabulary
Add all of the vocabulary listed below to your notebook. Make sure you follow the formatting we used for our first vocabulary list. You can see the words below.
Task 7: Continents and Oceans Map (8/23/23)
Grab a copy of the map from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy by clicking on the picture of my notebook below. Label all of the continents and oceans before coloring the map. After the map is completed fold the Map in half and tape one side into your notebook so that it can unfold. See my example below.
Task 8: From Continents to Cities (8/24/23)
Click the link below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom. You will need to follow all of the instructions in the Google Doc. You will learn the difference between Continents, Countries, States/Provinces while we zoom in on Timnath.
Task 9: Mapping Vocabulary (8/23/23)
The mapping vocabulary list is linked in the buttons below. One button will open the vocabulary in Quizlet where you can study using flashcards. The other button is a Google Doc with the vocabulary written out. You will need to write the vocabulary terms and definitions in your notebook. Make sure your page looks like mine to the right so the terms are easy to find.
Task 10: Picturing the World (Kami)
Click the link below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom. You will then click the "Open in Kami" link to complete this assignment. You will use the information found on the map to answer all 10 questions on the second page of the assignment. Make sure to turn your work in when you are done.
Task 11: Aerial America Colorado (Finding the 5 themes)
This is optional for you to watch. However it is an interesting video and a good way to try and find examples of the 5 themes of geography.
Click on your class period below to launch the Aerial America Video. Answer the questions as they come up during the video and make sure to read any notes that appear during the videos. (When asked, log in to EdPuzzle with Google)
Task 12: 7 Elements of Culture Notes
Set up the next two pages of your Social Studies Notebook to match mine below. (Zoom in if you can't read the information from the picture) Once your notebook is set up, watch the video below and use it to fill in your notes on the 7 elements of Culture.
Task 13: Flag of Me Assignment
Watch the video below teaching you the elements of good flag design. Once you know how to make a good flag, grab a copy of the flag assignment from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy by clicking on the image of the assignment below. You will design a flag that represents your culture. You will also need to explain how the symbols used on the flag represent your culture. Take pride in yourself and your culture and put in effort to make the flag look good.
